Randy Sheeks, an assistant professor of church music in Lee University’s School of Music, has been selected as the winner of Lee’s 2015 Excellence in Advising Award. He was recognized for this honor during spring commencement.

he Excellence Awards are the highest honors presented to Lee faculty members. The recipient of the Excellence in Advising Award is chosen by a faculty committee, which reviews a three-year history of student advisor evaluation data as well as other information provided by the nominating department chairs and deans.

“I am very honored to be chosen for this award,” said Mr. Sheeks. “It is a privilege to help students navigate the requirements of our degree programs. Seeing them progress from first-semester freshmen to graduating seniors is very fulfilling.”

Mr. Sheeks joined Lee’s faculty in the fall of 2010. Before coming to Lee, he spent 23 years in local church music ministry. His leadership in the Music and Fine Arts ministries at three different churches has made him a well-known voice in the world of church music.

Dr. Philip Thomas, department chair for musicianship studies, describes Mr. Sheeks as “advisor to most and mentor to all.” The selection committee for the award calls him “an exemplary model of the impact that excellent advising has on students.”

Mr. Sheeks received the Distinguished Musicianship Award from the Church of God in 2004, recognizing his work at the Metropolitan Church of God in Birmingham, where he served for 16 years and built a large and effective music program. His passion for the local church continues as he instructs students at Lee in the church music curriculum.

He is married to Debbie, an adjunct voice instructor on the music faculty at Lee. They have two daughters, Elizabeth and Meredith.
