Shirley D. Pounds, of Takoma Park, Maryland, formerly of Chattanooga, died after a long illness on Saturday, June 27, 2015, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Springs, Maryland. 

Shirley was born on Nov. 11, 1957, to Lillian Godfrey Farmer and Eli Pounds, Jr.   

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and Spellman Farmer, Jr. father; sister, Cathy Pounds; grandmothers, Daisy Moss McCoy and Ethel Pounds; andgrandfather, Thomas Godfrey.

Shirley professed Christ at an early age becoming a member of Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church.  After moving to Takoma Park, Maryland, she became a member of First Seventh-day Adventist Church and later moved her membership to Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church of Takoma Park, Maryland. 

A Chattanooga native, Shirley was educated in the local public schools and graduated from Chattanooga High School (City High) in 1975.  She earned her associate of applied science degree from ACT College, Rosslyn, Va. With over 15 years of experience as a medical records processing professional, she was the claims processing coordinator at Maxim Healthcare Services of Columbia, Md. 

Shirley will be greatly missed by her family and friends: Devoted aunt and uncle, Olivia Godfrey Smith and Elder Dr. Robert S. Smith;  Caregivers/cousins, Rodney Smith and Dr. Coletta Smith (Elloitt) Carter; sisters, Elizabeth “Sonya” Smith,  Tongeia Farmer, Jennifer Farmer; brother, Mallory Farmer; aunts, Jessica (James L) Moore; Eleanor M. Coffin; Jenell (Joe) Bynum, Jeneal (Herbert) Johnson, Linda (Hiram) Hawkins; Ruth Wright and Bessie Braswell; uncle, Bobby Eugene (Shirley) Farmer; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, in the chapel. Interment will be in Forest Hills Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon on Tuesday, July 7, and the family will receive friends from 6–7 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
