Brown's Ferry Civil War Walking Tour Is Oct. 25

  • Monday, September 14, 2015

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to participate in a free program on Sunday, October 25, at 3:30 pm along the Brown’s Ferry Federal Road Trail on Moccasin Bend.  This 90 minute, 1.2 mile walking tour, led by Park Historian Jim Ogden, begins at the Brown’s Ferry Federal Road trailhead, near 700 Moccasin Bend Road, on Moccasin Bend in Chattanooga. Special Event signs will also be posted off West Manufacturer’s Road to assist visitors in finding the program location.

During the Civil War, soldiers were often ordered to “march to the sound of the guns” as they moved into battle.  However, the Union army needed a new approach when planning to open a much needed supply line to the beleaguered and starving army in Chattanooga. Prior to the attack on October 27, 1863, Union forces planned the operation in detail, utilizing the quiet and darkness of night to execute a successful assault that opened “The Cracker Line.” Historian Jim Ogden examines these successful operations on Moccasin Bend during this special program.

As always, comfortable, supportive footwear, appropriate clothing for the weather and water are recommended.
