UTC Soccer 4-0 Win At Alabama A&M On Sunday

  • Sunday, September 6, 2015

NORMAL, Ala. --- The UTC women’s soccer team posted a 4-0 shutout Sunday afternoon against Alabama A&M at Bulldog Field to improve to 1-4. The Bulldogs remain winless at 0-4.

Sophomore Amanda Ortiz (Arlington, Tenn.) got the scoring stared early with a goal at the 1:49 mark of the game with an assist from sophomore Brandy Herrera (Clarksville, Tenn.).

Ortiz picked up the pass and kicked it in with a small deflection off the keeper’s glove for the goal.

“The early goal took a lot of pressure off,” UTC head coach Gavin McKinney said. “Any time you play, an early goal is huge. It let us settle down a little bit and we got the next soon after.”

It would not be long before Ortiz sent a pass to junior Samantha Hogan (Gallatin, Tenn.) whose shot from the top of the box found the back of the net in the ninth minute to make it 2-0 UTC.

The Mocs got another score before the end of the period from senior Skylar Brewer (Farragut, Tenn.) at the 41:50 mark after a flurry of attempts from sophomore McKenzie Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) were thwarted. Chattanooga went into intermission with a 3-0 lead.

Gregg would get a score with time winding down late in the game. Freshman Rachel Lindsey (Knoxville, Tenn.) sent a pass to Gregg on the left side of the box and her shot got past the A&M keeper for the score at the 86:55 mark.

Chattanooga outshot the Bulldogs 28-8 with a 17-5 shots on goal advantage. UC keeper junior Katie Emig (Knoxville) recorded four saves in 76 minutes.

Gregg had a game-high 10 shots with six on goal. Brewer had eight shots with four on goal.

Bulldog keeper Marissa Oehler had 13 saves. Estelle Esperance paced A&M with four shots.

“We got some good goals and created a lot of chances,” McKinney said. “We have to be happy but there is still a lot of learning to do. We’ll continue to get better and hopefully carry some of that momentum into next week.”

Chattanooga remains on the road next weekend for the Gardner-Webb tournament. The Mocs will face the host Bulldogs Friday night at 4 p.m.
