Mary Manuel with her GPS coaches, Rob Riddle and Jenny Bullard
GPS senior golfer Mary Melissa Manuel signed a letter of intent on Thursday, to continue her sport at Rhodes College as a member of the Lynx golf team in the fall.
At a ceremony at GPS celebrating her accomplishments, GPS coach Rob Riddle described Manuel as a “true student athlete,” adding that she was comfortable in a leadership role this past fall and she provided a foundation for the team’s third-place finish at the state tournament.
Manuel was the medalist at the 2015 Chattanooga City Jr.
Championship and placed second in the D. Tribble PGA Jr. Championship. She placed 9th in the 2014 TSSAA state tournament and 7th in the 2015 tournament. She was named to the
Chattanooga Times Free Press Best of the Preps Team. Her scoring average was 78.4.
“We are very excited about her joining our student body and golf team,” said Mike Clary, Rhodes Director of Athletics and Head Women’s Golf Coach. “As evidenced by her state tournament results, her scoring has been on a downward trajectory, which bodes well for her college career,” he said. Rhodes won the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championship and the 2014 and 2015 Southern Athletic Association Championships.
Manuel serves as co-editor-in-chief of the yearbook and as a GPS admission ambassador. She is a Peer Tutor, Key Club member, and a National Honor Society officer.
