Signal School Of Physical Education Hosts Gymnastics Meets, Offers New Self Defense Class

  • Wednesday, January 6, 2016

Signal School of Physical Education will host the "Scenic City Showdown" gymnastics meet on Saturday, Jan. 16. Teams from Talladega, Al. and Tullahoma, Tn. will be competing against SSPE's own gymnastics team.

Founded in 1978 as a non-profit organization, Signal School of Physical Education's goal is to provide quality sports training at an economical price. Last August, the school moved to its new facility at 407 Ault Road on Signal Mountain. The former gymnasium for the old Signal Mountain Middle School, this large gym has allowed for the addition of new gymnastics equipment as well as the opportunity to add more classes and host larger gymnastics meets.

The school will also be hosting the Southeast Regional Championships on April 23. Several teams will be competing for the Southeast Championship title. Qualifying competitors from this event can advance to the National Championships.

Admission to these events is $5 for adults, $3 for children 6-17 and free for age 5 and under.

Competition begins at 10 a.m. and continues throughout the day.

In addition to gymnastics, tennis, golf and swimming, SSPE is offering a new Adult Self Defense class beginning Saturday, Jan. 23. This class will be taught by Signal Mountain Police Captain Scott Ogrodowczyk. Captain Ogrodowczyk is a Board Member of the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Officer’s Association and has completed Instructor Level courses in Defensive Tactics, Straight and Expandable Baton, OC Spray, Pistol, Shotgun, Rifle, and Submachine Gun, and Active Shooter. He served as an adjunct instructor of self-defense and personal safety at Chattanooga State Technical Community College from 1999-2006.

"SSPE is proud to offer this opportunity to learn from this experienced trainer," officials said.

The Self Defense class is open to males and females over the age of 16. Cost for the eight week session is $125. For more information and to register for this class, visit www.signalschoolofpe.org.
