Police said employees were forced to lie on the floor face down during a frightening holdup at the Trust Credit Union on Gunbarrel Road on Wednesday.
Quincy Demarcus Richards, 38, was apprehended after the vehicle used by the robbers crashed and he tried to cross I-75 on foot.
The second robber got away despite an extensive search.
Police said two black males entered the credit union with guns. One retrieved an employee from her office at gunpoint and had her sit on a sofa.
The pair began going through teller drawers while employees were lying on the floor. They took over $19,000 in cash.
The robbers fled in a silver Jeep Compass, going left out of the credit union onto Gunbarrel Road.
An off duty city police officer spotted the get-away vehicle and began pursuing it. He lost sight of it after a brief chase. It crashed nearby on Jarnagan Road.
An eyewitness heard the crash and saw Richards fleeing from the scene while dropping money. He headed toward the Hampton Inn.
Police followed his path and found clothing matching those worn by the robbers.
Calls came in that a man was trying to run across the nearby freeway. Officers eventually caught up with Richards, who was sweating and breathing heavily after jumping several fences.
He said he had "gotten himself into a messed-up situation."
Richards has a lengthy criminal record.
