Lee Women Rally To win 4-2 Over Valdosta State

  • Friday, October 28, 2016
The Lee women's soccer team rebounded from an early goal by host Valdosta State University and went on to post their sixth straight victory, 4-2 over the Blazers on Thursday evening.

Kayla Robles put Valdosta on top 1-0 in the 11th minute. The Lady Flames tied the contest at the 17:08 mark when Lauren Peters tallied her 11th goal of the season. It came from 15 yards out and sailed over the outstretched arms of the Valdosta goalkeeper.

Lee took the lead for good in the 18th minute when Kinsey Cichowitz went one-on-one with the Blazer keeper to record her first of two goals on the evening.
The Lady Flames made it a 3-1 margin in the 24th minute when McKenzie Bricker picked up her fifth goal of the season. The score came off a set play from a corner kick.

The Blazers cut the margin to 3-2 when Robles scored again in the 33rd minute. The Lady Flames ended all the scoring of the evening when Cichowitz was awarded a penalty kick in the 43rd minute. It was her team-leading 13th goal of the year.

Lee took 17 shots and placed 10 on goal. Valdosta keeper Alyssa Curtis registered six saves. The Blazers attempted 11 shots and fired seven on target. Lee keeper Erin Olson picked up the win while collecting six saves.

"It was a strange game," admitted Lee head coach Chris Hennessey after his club improved to 13-2-1 on the year and 10-1 in Gulf South Conference play. "We got the win and again we will take it. We were a little too open in the first half and that hurt us. The second half was better as we played with more balance."

Lee senior Kaela Leskovar was injured late in the contest and had to be helped off the pitch. "Right now we are not sure about the seriousness of the injury," said Hennessey. However, it appeared to be a knee or ankle injury.

The Lady Flames will have a day of rest before moving on up to Carrollton, Ga. on Saturday (6:30) for their final regular-season game of the year against the University of West Georgia.
