A 19-year-old has been charged with robbing the Subway on Rossville Boulevard on Friday.
David Hunter Jr., of 2717 Rossville Blvd., is charged with aggravated robbery.
A female employee said Hunter came into the business shortly after 9 a.m. and waited to give his order until other customers were about to leave. He ordered a foot-long chicken bacon ranch and two chocolate chip cookies.
When she rang up his order and told him how much he owed, he told her he would have to use his debit card.
As he was looking for his card something in his pocket hit the counter and made a loud noise. The employee believed it was a gun.
The robber then told her to open the register and give him all the money or he was going to kill her. The employee gave him all the money out of the register. He then instructed her not to move for 60 seconds or he would kill her.
The robber then left with the money, the sandwich and the chocolate chip cookies.
The employee then locked the door and called police. She said the robber got about $97 in cash. He was last seen running west across Rossville Boulevard, then north on Calhoun Avenue.
A detective viewed video of the robbery. It showed the robber with long braids that had brown tips and wearing a crimson red-hooded jacket with Alabama across the back. He had multi-colored pajama-typed pants, red sneakers with red laces, and white trimmed soles.
Police were told the suspect's name was David Hunter and he lived at the Hamilton Inn. The detective was told at the Hamilton Inn it did not have a guest registered by that name. When the clerk was shown a picture of Hunter she said he stays in room 218 with Aaleeda Duncan.
When officers went to that room, Hunter came out of the bathroom and was detained. Police said Hunter finally admitted to committing the robbery. He said he did not have a job and his girlfriend, Ms. Duncan, was pregnant with his child and he needed the money.
Asked what he did with the clothes he was wearing, he said he took them off and threw them away along Calhoun Avenue. He said he used about $60 of the money to pay rent so Ms. Duncan would not get evicted.
Hunter said he did not have a gun during the holdup, but did keep his hand in his pocket.
