Bachman Academy, a day and boarding school for students with learning disabilities in McDonald, TN, is launching a new program aimed at young adults. Bachman Transitions is designed to help young adults complete the transition from high school to adulthood.

According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities, only 67% of high school students with a diagnosed learning disability ever enroll in a post-secondary education program and, of those, less than half are able to complete the program successfully.

This can be attributed to the fact that a very small percentage of young adults with a learning disability receive any type of educational assistance or support in college.

“The numbers are staggering. As educators, we are tasked with the responsibility of preparing our students for life beyond graduation. Bachman Transitions fills the gap left between high school graduation and success as a working adult,” said Mark Frizzell, headmaster and CEO of Bachman Academy.

Through direct instruction in the Transitions lab, residents of Bachman Transitions learn the essential life skills for independent living; such as budgeting, cooking, household management, and arranging transportation. The residents are then able to put their newfound skills into practice while living in off-campus housing under the constant guidance of a Life Coach.

Bachman Transitions has developed a relationship with several local career training programs, like the Tennessee College of Applied Technology at Chattanooga State. This allows residents of the transition program to graduate with a vocational certification upon successful completion of both programs. Bachman Transitions provides the additional social, emotional, and academic support required by the residents while they are attending TCAT so ensure their potential success upon graduation.

Bachman Transitions is providing a new avenue for young adults with learning disabilities to be successful long after high school graduation.
