Cooking Classroom Wraps First Annual Cook And Create For At-Risk Students

  • Thursday, July 21, 2016

The Sweet and Savory Classroom and Susanne Bowling from Battle Academy teamed up to offer a week long summer camp for at-risk students, teaching them cooking and art skills necessary for lifelong health and well being.

“The Westside Community is an underserved community where 82 percent of residents live below the poverty line. These students, many of whom attend Battle Academy, face challenges including crime, violence, and broken families. Summer is a crucial time for at-risk students to develop into men of character,” said Jeff Pennypacker, owner of The Sweet and Savory Classroom. “Through culinary and visual arts, we have seen children respond and become engaged in areas that give them confidence, leadership skills, and connection with a new world outside their neighborhood.”

The cooking class, held Monday through Thursday, was for male students ages 10-12 years old from the West Side. Students learned about leadership, food, planning, and how to prepare meals. They had the chance to cook meals and enjoy the food together. They spent half of the day in the kitchen and the other half at the easel. The students will prepare a meal for sponsors on Thursday and then serve the food to them.
