No Extended Closure Of Cassandra Smith Road And New Paving Will Go Forward

  • Friday, July 8, 2016
The scheduled sewer rehabilitation work requiring Cassandra Smith Road in Hixson to be closed for three weeks will be delayed until summer 2017. In keeping with the planned road improvements scheduled to happen with the sewer upgrades, Public Works will move forward with paving Cassandra Smith Road, which will enhance the experience for drivers and residents in the Hixson area, officials said.

Officials said The City of Chattanooga’s Department of Public Works gave contractors a tight timeline to ensure the road would reopen before nearby Big Ridge Elementary School was back in session for the year.
Impacting the timeline was the discovery of mass amounts of rock that must be removed. The delays would have significantly impacted school traffic and the cost to expedite the work before the school year. Only the Cassandra Smith Road portion of this sewer project is being delayed until next summer, which will not impact customers in the area as sewer service will continue uninterrupted.

Paving of Cassandra Smith Road is still scheduled to be completed this month between Stage Coach Run subdivision and Hamill Road. Department of Public Works crews are making base repairs in preparation for this resurfacing. The preparation and paving project will be managed with localized lane closures, and there may be some intermittent delays, according to officials.
