Celebrate National Public Lands Day At A Tennessee State Park On Saturday

  • Wednesday, September 21, 2016

In recognition of National Public Lands Day, Tennessee State Parks, State Natural Areas and Friends Groups invite the public to take part in ranger-led hikes, volunteer projects and interpretive programs across the state on Saturday.

In recognizing the importance of building partnerships that combine a love of the outdoors and volunteering, Governor Bill Haslam has declared Sept. 24, 2016 Tennessee Public Lands Day.

“As the Volunteer State, we hope all Tennesseans will consider joining us to take responsibility for the beautiful lands we get to call home,” said Deputy Commissioner for Parks and Conservation Brock Hill. “This day of service and helps to improve the condition and splendor of our public lands for the greater enjoyment of all who care to visit or live here.”

A new addition this year is an opportunity to bicycle through one of ten Tennessee State Parks. In honor of the Adventure Cycling Association’s first ever Bike Your Park Day, bike tours will range from 3-15 miles, with beginner-friendly routes at a park like Montgomery Bell State Park, and more challenging terrain at Norris Dam State Park and others.

National Public Lands Day (NPLD) began in 1994 with just three federal agencies and 700 volunteers. Last year, more than 1,000 volunteers statewide built trails, planted trees and removed litter to improve Tennessee’s shared lands. Now in its 23rd year, NPLD is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands, which make up over 30% of America’s landscape.
