EPB's Fiberoptic Venture Continues To Boost Electric Side

  • Friday, January 20, 2017

EPB's venture into phone, television and Internet continues to boost its electric side - putting $11.8 million in profits onto the ledger already this fiscal year.

Greg Eaves, chief financial officer, said the profit by the end of the fiscal year should be between $18 million and $19 million.

Electrical sales have been doing well on their own. Mr. Eaves said sales in December were five percent above budget as there were $52.45 million in revenues.

Net income for the month was $2.4 million.

EPB is $7.9 million ahead for the electric portion thus far in the fiscal year.

David Wade, president, said EPB now has 88,000 TV customers - far above initial projections.

The fiberoptic debt is expected to be paid off sometimes this year. At one time, EPB was paying it down by more than $1 million per month.

Mr. Wade said the utility has been having to put more capital into set top boxes with new HD offerings.

He said it is envisioned that with new technology the boxes will go away as the move continues toward streaming of video content. He said, "We see a lot of momentum in that direction," which he said will be a plus for EPB.
