Erlanger Almost Doubling Pharmacy Space At New Location; However, 27 Parking Spots In Doctors Lot To Go Away

  • Monday, January 23, 2017

Erlanger Health System is making plans to almost double the size of its pharmacy department at a new location on the main Erlanger campus on Third Street.

The pharmacy is slated to move from sixth floor space to an area known as the "Bat Cave" under an operating area.

Dr. Allen Broome, pharmacy director, said the current pharmacy oncology class 7 compounding area was found to be unsatisfactory to meet new standards.

He said the new area will be closer to the deliveries and cut down on security concerns.

Dr. Broome said the objective of the move "is to develop a world class space for the Baroness campus pharmacy that will be a leader in process development, cost efficiency, automation and patient safety."

The new space includes some 10,000 square feet.

The cost of the build out will be $2,252,461.

Officials said one negative is that it will take 27 parking spaces in the physician lot.

Dr. Woody Kennedy said, "That's a problem. Twenty seven cars is a lot of cars."

He said in the mornings it is already difficult to find a spot in the lot.

Robert Brooks, Erlanger chief operating officer, said there are generally numerous spaces available on the third floor of the garage.

Dr. Kennedy, however, said it can take as long as 45 minutes to get down from the upper parking levels. "I don't want to be stuck up there," he said.

COO Brooks said a couple of non-physician groups are parking in the lot. He also said some physician staff members are using it.

He said the medical staff leadership will be asked about "whittling some of the people out."
