World War II Veteran Retired From Holsum Bakery

Thomas W. Higgins, also known as “Uncle Tommy”, 96, of Hixson, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2017. 

Thomas was the youngest of four sons born in Hixson, to the late Moses and Hallie Stulce Higgins. He served our country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. Thomas was awarded the Purple Heart, E.A.M.E. Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge. Thomas retired from Holsum Bakery as a mechanic with over 21 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. “Uncle Tommy” never met a stranger and was an avid gardener who would share his crop with anyone.   

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Pryce Brown Higgins; siblings, Howard, Harry, Eugene Higgins, Lou Branum, Louise Shannon and Lucille Wood.

Thomas is survived by his sister, Sarah Wilson; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Chapel of Devotion with David Iverson and Jarrod Wilson officiating.

The family would like to thank his caregivers, Sandy, Barbara, Linda and Micki for their love and care given to “Uncle Tommy”. They would also like to thank the staff and nurses with Amedysis Hospice. 

Memorial contributions may be made in “Uncle Tommy’s” name to The Gideon’s International.      

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, Tn.
