- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Kennedy Thomson (Catharine’s, Ontario) finished second in her heat and fifth overall to advance to the 800 meter finals Sunday at the Mountain States Health Alliance Center on Day One of the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Thomson covered the track in a time of 2:16.60, less than half a second behind Samford’s Presley Weems in the second heat. Freshman Abby Bateman ran a PR time of 2:19.34, but was just out of qualifying with a ninth place overall finish.
Freshman Mercedes Bright (), slowed down last season with injuries, recorded PRs in the 60 meter Dash (8.21) and the 200m (27.84) but was just out of contention for the finals.
Senior Anna Kate Chance (Columbia, Tenn.), despite battling illness, provided strong leadership for the Mocs on the track in the 3000 meter run.
She struggled with the distance race but was able to finish 14th overall.
Chattanooga, two-time defending DMR champions, fielded an all-freshman team.
“Our DMR did well for being an all-freshman team,” Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. “They ran hard and were sixth in the finals, scoring for us today.”
Day Two will feature the finals for the 800 meter, 5000 meter and the 4x400 meter relay. Follow all the action at GoMocs.com.
