UTC Student Monroig Earns Pearson Minority Scholarship Award

  • Tuesday, February 28, 2017

UTC student Darolyn Monroig is on the learning path to becoming a school psychologist. Born in Puerto Rico, and the first in her family to graduate from college, this bilingual go-getter wants to use her degree to help Spanish-speaking families.

Ms. Monroig said, “When I’m in my role as a school psychologist, I want to be a face these families recognize. I want them to know I speak their language, I can translate, I’ve been there, and I understand.”

Ms. Monroig was awarded the Pearson Minority Scholarship Award at the 2017 National Association for School Psychologist annual convention. She credits her success to a supportive family, and being a role model for her two-year-old son.

“Life throws a lot of hurdles at us,” said Ms. Monroig.  “If we stop for each one, none of us would ever get anywhere.”
