Harlan Porfiri, a sixth grader at Girls Preparatory School, has advanced to the semifinalist round and will compete in the 2017 Tennessee National Geographic State Bee in Nashville on Friday, March 31.

The daughter of Dave and Linda Porfiri, Harlan beat out 75 other GPS middle schoolers for the GPS title. As the school champion, she then took a written geography test to qualify for the State Bee.

Only the 100 highest-scoring participants qualify at the state level. Because the contest is open to 4th through 8th graders, Harlan has the opportunity to enter the contest for two more years.

The winner of the Tennessee State Bee goes to the National Bee in May, where the winner will receive over $50,000 in prizes and scholarships. If Harlan wins the State Bee, she will receive $100, the National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World, 4th Edition, and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent Tennessee in the National Geographic Bee Championship to be held at National Geographic Society headquarters, May 14-17, 2017.

The national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and an all-expenses paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the new National Geographic Endeavour ll.
