First Time in Chattanooga: No.1 men’s seed Will Spencer is playing the TVOC for the first time and also his first visit to the Scenic City.

“I have been to the downtown area (north shore) and impressed that so many people are out walking or running,” said Spencer who played college tennis at Texas A&M and Georgia. “Chattanooga seems like a real active city.”

On the pro tour for the past two years, Spencer makes sure any tournament money won is used wisely.

“I like organic foods so I cook my own food at tournaments, string my on racquets and am fortunate to have free housing here in Chattanooga during the TVOC,” said Spencer who was a teammate and roommate of Chattanooga native Will Reynolds while at Georgia.

A $3,000 winners’ check today would also give Spencer good memories of Chattanooga.

Doubles Team Back Together … Men’s 55s top-seeded Wesley Cash and Pem Guerry are playing tournament tennis together for the first time in 20 years … the long-time duo first played together at Baylor School in the early 1970s and won a national interscholastic doubles title as seniors in 1975 among several other championships … they face Ken Koeling and Scott Shepherd in the finals at 1 p.m.
