Covenant's Lilly Smith Earns Another USA South Honor

  • Monday, October 1, 2018
Covenant women's cross country senior Lilly Smith keeps racking up the awards. Smith was named the USA South Runner of the Week for a fourth straight week, announced the conference on Monday afternoon.

Smith becomes the first Covenant runner to win the weekly conference honor four times in one season since Covenant joined the league in 2013.
It is the ninth career weekly honor for Smith.

A senior from Weaverville, N.C., Smith won her fourth consecutive meet to start the season as she outpaced the field at Saturday's Maryville Invitational with a 6k time of 23:09.9, the third fastest time in program history. Smith bested a field of 69 runners, including the reigning USA South meet champion in Methodist's Lindsey Pritchard.

Smith's time and individual title helped Covenant to a team title, the Scots' fourth straight to begin the season.

The individual win for Smith continues a known program record as Smith is the first runner to win four meets, both consecutively and in a season. After Smith's time on Saturday, the senior now owns the top three 6k times in program history. She also holds the program's top two-mile time and is 10th all-time in the 5k.

Covenant will have a week off from competition before heading to Mount Berry, Ga., for the Berry Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13. The men's 8k starts at 9 a.m., while the women's 6k is set for 10 a.m.
