UTC Men Tackle SoCon Championships Starting Sunday In Pinehurst

The Chattanooga Mocs open postseason play Sunday at the Southern Conference men’s Golf Championships. The eight-team field tackles Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C.

The quintet gets started on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., paired with Wofford off No. 1. The Mocs are looking to add to their championships ledger of six team and two individual titles. The squad captured crowns in 1987, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013, while Donnie Green (1978) and PGA TOUR member Stephan Jaeger (2012) claimed medalist honors.

This is the fifth straight league championships competed on Pinehurst No. 9, formerly Pinehurst National. UTC Hall of Famer Matt Vick is the head pro at No. 9. Vick was an All-American kicker for the Mocs graduating in 2000.

3 NOTES TO KNOW

-       Since Mark Guhne took over as head coach in 2005-06, the Mocs claimed five team titles (2007. 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013) and one individual crown (Stephan Jaeger-2012) while posting 13 top 5s and 23 top 10s in the SoCon Championships. The program had one team win (1987), one medalist (Donnie Green-1978), 15 top 5s and 30 top 10s in the 28 prior championships.

-       Long and Johnson are tied for the team lead in par or better 18s (13) and rounds in the 60s (4).

-       UTC’s opening round scoring average is 300.40. The quintet puts together 292.68 strokes per 18 the rest of the way.
