Lee University sociology students recently presented at the Southern Sociological Society 2018 Annual Meeting, held in New Orleans, La. The topic for this year’s conference was Racial Theory, Analysis, and Politics in Trump America.

Lee University’s Dr. Arlie Tagayuna, associate professor of sociology, led the trip. He noted this was the largest group he has taken in his years of attending the conference.

Student presenters included Micah Adkins, Megan Balut, Ashley Crass, Jed Foster, Jaclyn Hagan, Harley Lookenott, Jessica Lookenott, Rachel Nichols, Mykah Smith, and David Tolliver.

“It was stellar to learn from so many well-established sociologists and to present the research we've been working on for the past year alongside them,” said Mr. Adkins. “It gave me confidence in all my hard work.”

According to Dr. Tagayuna, Lee students had a wide variety of presentations, including “American Dad In Trump America: Expectation, Concern, and Care of Fathers of Different Ethnic Groups” by Tolliver, “En la Mano de Dios: Perception of Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals within Hispanic Communities in Southeastern Tennessee” by Crass, and “Abandoned Conviction: Parental Influence on Political and Religious Identity of Evangelical Millennials” by Adkins, among others.

“I am very pleased that our students represented our university so well,” said Dr. Tagayuna. “Several professors and participants commented on the caliber of our students and compared their research to graduate work, and many our students have been recruited by different graduate chairs for their program. I could not be more proud that our students’ hard work paid off and that they came to realize how their research can have a profound effect on society and their future.”
