More new projects for rapidly-changing North Chattanooga were on the agenda for the Form Based Code Committee on Thursday.
The panel denied four variances sought by Roddy Anderson for a mixed-use project at Hamilton Avenue and North Market Street. It would have yielded some additional parking.
The project will have commercial on the ground floor and 21 residential units above - mainly two-bedroom with some three-bedroom.
There will be 16 parking spots underneath the building with some additional outside.
Several neighbors objected to the entire project with William Torbett saying, "There is nothing in the area of this size and scope, and we want to keep it that way. It doesn't belong there. It overcrowds the lot terribly."
Mr. Anderson said, "We're not trying to do anything that's ugly and horrible."
Just up North Market at Peak Street, four units are already underway on a new residential project that will also featured attached two-car garages. It was granted some variances.
Ethan Collier has a new project at 422 Harper Street for additional residential units. He was allowed to have three stories on the ground level to match three stories for units on a higher slope.
In another case, the panel allowed a 2-footx14-foot sign to be on the top stairwell of the Moxy Hotel that is rising on King Street near South Market.
It was the first such rooftop sign allowed by the panel, but it was noted there are some similar ones on the Southside.
Former Mayor Jon Kinsey was among those speaking in favor of the sign request.
