  • Saturday, September 1, 2018

Cecil Green Culpepper, 91, of Frederick, Maryland, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Tuesday night at Citizens Nursing Home, surrounded by loved ones.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1926, in Fyffe, Al., to Green Walter Culpepper and Hilda Etta Tilley.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Dunlevy Culpepper; his son, Steven Ward Culpepper; daughter, Mary Alice Culpepper; brother-in-law, Marvin L. Barron, DDS; nieces, Hilda Neis, Tina Barron, Sheila Cox, and Michelle Culpepper and a nephew, Jimmy Doyle Culpepper.

Cecil was preceded in death by his younger brothers, Doyle and Roger, and his younger sister Maxine. His first wife of 48 years, Alice Ruth, a wonderful wife and mother passed away in 1996.

A nearly 20-year resident of Frederick, Cecil enjoyed visiting with friends and a large and welcoming extended family. He was a previous longtime resident of Chattanooga, where he and Alice raised their family together.

A Navy veteran, Cecil served on the USS Intrepid during World War II and later was called back to duty during the Korean War. Upon his return to civilian life, he earned his business degree from the University of Chattanooga (now the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he later established the Culpepper Family Scholarship), and he enjoyed a long and successful career in Chattanooga with The Quaker Oats Company.

Together with Jean, he had volunteered with the Frederick Rescue Mission. In Chattanooga, he had volunteered for Changed Lives.

A member of First Presbyterian Church, Cecil is remembered by all who have known him as a Christian gentleman who very much loved his family, his country, and his Lord Jesus Christ. He is loved and missed.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road with the Reverend Chris Ehlers officiating.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3, and from 1:30–2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.
