  • Thursday, September 20, 2018

Governor Phil Bredesen, candidate for U.S. Senate, on Thursday, released the following statement regarding the passing of Former Tennessee Congresswoman Marilyn Lloyd, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1975 – 1995.

He said, "I am saddened to learn of the passing of Marilyn Lloyd, someone I am fortunate enough to have had the honor of knowing for many years. As Tennessee's first Congresswoman elected to a full term, she was an independent thinker and a staunch advocate for the people of Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District.

My condolences go out to her family."

Congressman Chuck Fleischmann said, “My prayers are with Lloyd family after hearing of Marilyn Lloyd’s passing. I thank Marilyn for her service to our great state in representing the wonderful people of Tennessee’s Third District in the U.S. House of Representatives for 20 years. While I am saddened by her passing, the legacy of Marilyn Lloyd will forever be a part of East Tennessee history.”

Dr. Danielle Mitchell, Tennessee congressional candidate, said, "Since our nation's founding, women have led critical fights for progress and served as catalysts for much-needed change. Today, we honor the life and legacy of Marilyn Lloyd.

"Marilyn was a pioneer whose legacy will live on across Tennessee. To honor that legacy, I will continue her fight to defend a woman's right to choose, to secure equal pay, and to make sure when decisions are being made, women are at the table.

"I extend my deepest condolences to those who she loved, and those who loved her in return. My thoughts and prayers are with her family."
