New Programs Underway For Youth Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Chattanooga

  • Tuesday, September 25, 2018

New programs are underway for youth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the greater Chattanooga area and around the world.  The biggest change announced so far is that the Church is discontinuing its role with the Boy Scouts of America, after 100 years of association.

Camps and other outdoor activities will still be part of our activities,” local Chattanooga Stake President John Griffey said.  “Most of all, we will continue to hold activities that strengthen faith in Jesus Christ.”  The Church has announced plans to also introduce new resources to “build character and resilience, develop life skills, and fulfill their divine roles as daughters and sons of God.”

“Local leaders, youth, and parents will identify and provide outdoor activities that invite spiritual experiences and meet the needs of their children and youth,” according to lds.org.  “Weekday activities, outdoor adventures, and youth conferences will continue as a vital part of helping children and youth learn, develop friendships, serve, and strengthen faith in Jesus Christ.”

In the greater Chattanooga area, youth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have already participated in several activities this year including a youth conference, a girls camp at Camp Dogwood, dances, service projects, and weekly character building and friendship making experiences.  Many youth in the greater Chattanooga area also attend early morning seminary, where they study the scriptures and learn about Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.  Scripture study includes the Bible and the Book of Mormon, which is another testament of Jesus Christ and a companion to not a replacement for the Bible.  In its more than 6,000 verses, the Book of Mormon refers to Jesus Christ almost 4,000 times.  The crowning event in the Book of Mormon is the visit of the Resurrected Christ to the people in the New World, at which time Jesus Christ established His Church, just as He did in the Old World.

Local youth also learn about church history.  Early morning seminary is a four-year religious education program for youth ages 14 – 18, usually held at 6:00 amMonday-Friday, and coincides with high school calendars.  All youth in the greater Chattanooga are invited to attend.  Early morning seminary is free of charge.

More announcements about upcoming changes to the youth program are forthcoming and expected to be in place by 2020.
