Katie Burrow Era Tips Off At UTC

  • Thursday, September 27, 2018

Bouncing balls and the swish of the nets. It sounded just like any other basketball practice. However, today would begin the Katie Burrows Era of women’s basketball at Chattanooga.

Burrows spent four seasons on the bench as a student-athlete, leading the Mocs to four consecutive Southern Conference titles. Over the last eight, she assisted two legends of the coaching realm and helped the Mocs to five more titles.

Junior Lakelyn Bouldin is the top scorer returning to the lineup for the Mocs.

She was third on the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game. Redshirt junior Arianne Whitaker started 28 of the Mocs’ 30 games last season and averaged 6.1 points per game and led the team in rebounding with 6.8 per game.

Molly Melton and Shelbie Davenport are the Mocs two seniors on a young squad and redshirt junior Nakeia Burks makes her return to the lineup after missing last season with a knee injury.

The Mocs sophomore class features Bria Dial, Brooke Burns, Rochelle Lee and Mya Long. Dial was selected to the Southern Conference all-freshman squad last year and made 10 starts. Burns started five games to close out the season and averaged 16.2 points per game. She scored a UTC freshman-record 36 points in the Mocs double-overtime loss to UNCG in the SoCon Tournament.

Burrows’ freshmen class is comprised of Abbey Cornelius (Knoxville, Tenn.), Eboni Williams (Hoover, Ala.), Morgan Hill (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Pareunuora “Pare” Pene (New Zealand) all ready to make their mark on the Mocs’ program.

Chattanooga’s schedule this year is not any easier than in years past. After tipping off the year against Lee University, the Mocs welcome Final Four participant Louisville to the arena. Just before Christmas, former head coach Wes Moore returns to the Roundhouse with the NC State Wolfpack.

UTC will have 14 home games this season including seven SoCon matchups. The Mocs will travel to Virginia just after Thanksgiving for the Cavalier Classic and then to Bronx, N.Y., for the Fordham Holiday Classic after Christmas.

The season tips off Tuesday, November 6 at the McKenzie Arena against Lee University. Season tickets are on sale now at the arena box office and online at GoMocs.com. Please note that the Louisville and NC State games will have special pricing and reserved seating.
