McCoy Farm And Gardens To Host Monarch Butterfly Presentation By Expert Dr. Andrew Brower

As part of a continuing community-wide interest in sustainable pollinator practices, McCoy Farm and Gardens (“McCoy”) will host an afternoon with Dr. Andrew Brower of Middle Tennessee State University (“MTSU”).  “Monarch butterfly migration: an endangered phenomenon?” Dr. Brower will speak and answer questions about the life cycle and migratory patterns of the monarch butterfly and some of the conservation issues in the midst of the Horseshoe Gardens and newly completed Butterfly Waystation at McCoy.

The Monarch Butterfly presentation by Dr. Andrew Brower will be on site at the pavilion at the Horseshoe Garden and recently completed Butterfly Waystation Garden at McCoy Farm and Gardens at 1604 Taft Highway on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. 

Dr. Brower, a Biology professor at MTSU, is the son of the late Franklin Brower, internationally renowned for his academic career studying and championing the migratory lifecycle of monarch butterflies.  Dr. Brower’s research focuses on the evolution and biogeography of butterflies.  He holds B.S. and M.E.S. degrees from Yale University and a PhD from Cornell University.  He is a Research Associate at both the National Museum of Natural History and the American Museum of Natural History and has lectured nationally and internationally. People of all ages who have an interest in monarchs and other butterflies will want to put this event on their calendars.

McCoy Farm and Gardens, where history, community, and pollinators converge on Walden’s Ridge.  Step back in time at this lovely mountain property with its renovated country manor, woodland walking trails, apple orchard, and recently restored gardens.  These horseshoe shaped gardens, three years in the making, are designed to provide monarch butterflies and other pollinators with food and shelter among over 100 plant species, many of which are natives, using renewable techniques and conservation practices. The gardens enhance this special retreat and are a focal point for community events, educational opportunities, private parties, and something as simple as a meditative moment.
