East Lake Elementary closed school early on Monday due to an air conditioning equipment malfunction, but will re-open on Tuesday.
The school began to dismiss at 1:15 p.m. with buses beginning the process to take children home. Car riders also began the dismissal process at that time.
HCDE officials said, "Closing school early is a precaution due to the high temperatures in the community this afternoon. Our top priority in Hamilton County Schools is the safety of the children in our care. Staff will remain at the school until all children have been picked up this afternoon. Additional fans have been delivered to the school to assist in cooling the building during the dismissal process."
Maintenance crews corrected the problem. The school will open on the normal schedule Tuesday morning.
