Cleveland Middle School Beta Club Qualifies For Nationals During Virtual Leadership Summit

  • Thursday, December 10, 2020

National Beta members from Cleveland Middle School are celebrating their participation in the Tennessee Virtual Leadership Summit. They were announced as qualifiers in all four of the following challenges: Rapid Response, Service Snapshot, Lead Outside the Box, and Eva Lipscomb was selected as one of the three Leadership Representatives.

Seventh and eighth grade BETA Club officers and members had the option to attend the Leadership Summit virtually for their first time due to COVID.  Students were broken into three challenge teams to complete in Rapid Response (engineering), Service Snapshot (community service project), and Lead Outside the Box (create a digital tool kit for parents to navigate a viral world).  The students worked with faculty sponsors: Ali Creel, Kristen Early and Chris Schroll.

Students met over Google Meet to brainstorm, record, and submit their challenges to National BETA. Students attended the Summit virtually on Zoom on two separate occasions from the Media Center at CMS or from their homes. Their victories at this level provide the opportunity to compete at the national level. National Convention will be held at the Swan and Dolphin Resort at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fl. during Summer 2021.

The following students participated:

Kennin Featheringill
Abigail Salyer
Maeve Clark
Noah Hoggin
Will Matthews
Braddock Tippit
Maddy Dauphinaus
Maggi Creel
Annastasia White
Eva Lipscomb
Emma Fannon
Kara Alhberg

Typically, National Beta Leadership Summits bring together students from multiple states for a one to two day event. During that time, students work with interactive speakers who engage members through introspective exercises and team-building activities. Clubs can also participate in team-based leadership challenges which test their communication, critical thinking, creativity, presentation, and collaboration skills. While the Leadership Summit, originally planned to be held in Gatlinburg, Tn., was cancelled for in-person attendance due to health and safety concerns stemming from the COVID-19, members were able to work together to submit their challenges online and met virtually for interactive leadership trainings from Bill Cordes and Ted Weise.
