Police Departments Promote "Slow Down Tennessee" To Reduce Speeding-Related Crashes

  • Monday, October 11, 2021

The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office to promote “Slow Down Tennessee.” During Oct. 15-29, BCSO will increase education and enforcement efforts to help reduce speeding-related crashes, injuries and fatalities statewide. The public is encouraged to participate by using #SlowDownTN on social media to help spread awareness.

The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office has increased routine speed reductions, especially in school zones, and prioritized DUI enforcement, in order to lower the number of serious injury crashes in Bradley County. The deputies utilize speed trailers, radar and observation techniques in problem areas. BCSO will also be monitoring highly traveled roadways in Bradley County in order to combat speeding, reckless driving and all other traffic offenses.

"The state of Tennessee requires motorists to always exercise due care and maintain a safe speed while driving. Speed limits may vary depending on the county and road conditions; therefore, drivers must always pay attention and adhere to posted speed limits to ensure the safety of all roadway users," officials said.

Collegedale Police, who are also taking part, said city leaders "have taken a significant step forward by updating the development standards inside the city limits to promote and improve the walking and bicycling infrastructure in Tennessee’s fastest growing municipality."

“These standards are really going to make a difference for the future safety of our pedestrian and cycling enthusiasts as they travel on and beside our roadways” said Kirsten Ert, Collegedale’s senior community planner. “We want our citizens to know that their health and safety are among the city’s biggest priorities, and that we will continue to work tirelessly to provide programs and standards such as these so that they, and their children, can continue to enjoy the amazing benefits this city provides.”

“Reducing your speed isn’t just to prevent vehicle crashes but to also keep the pedestrians and cyclists who share our roads safe” added Sgt. Corey Loftis, the department’s traffic program manager.

The Collegedale Police Department will be participating in the “Slow Down Tennessee” campaign this month by monitoring traffic and stopping speeders on city roadways.

Officials said, "We encourage the public to participate with us by using #SlowDownTN on their social media platforms to help spread awareness about the importance of slowing down and protecting the lives around us, as well as your own.
