Ann Marie Self, 81, of Rossville, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, April 9, 2021, following a brief illness.

Marie was a faithful member of Concord Baptist Church and until the beginning of the pandemic, she was active teaching in their ESL (English as a Second Language) program helping immigrants learn the English language.  She was passionate about sharing the gospel with others, not only personally but through generously supporting a number of missionaries and ministries.  She was also a mentor to many in their Christian walk.

Marie was an avid reader and a dedicated student of God’s Word throughout her adult life.  She loved to discuss theology but more importantly sought to live in alignment with truth as a cherished daughter and humble servant of the Most High.  Other interests included sports, having participated in basketball and tennis in her early adult years.

In addition to having a great appreciation for fine art, Marie was a talented artist herself.  Her paintings and mixed-media artwork will continue to be admired, enjoyed, and valued by her friends for years to come.

Born in Meridian, Ms., Marie came to the Chattanooga area in the 1950s.  She graduated from Tennessee Temple Schools and then obtained her master’s degree from UTC.  She taught English in Catoosa County for 30 years, most of that time at Lakeview Jr. High School.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Ephraim Davis “Pete” Self and Ethel Hassan Self, and sister Lillie Haney.  She is survived by her sister Betty Chest, brother-in-law Bill Haney, three nephews, several great-nieces and nephews, and a host of dear friends, including her special sister-friend Sandra Wild.

A graveside service will be held at Hamilton Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, April 13, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Concord Baptist Church, 7025 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN  37421, and designated for the ESL program.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road.
