The Chickamauga Chapter NSDAR Chairman for DAR Schools, Karen Durbin, travelled to the Hindman Settlement School in Hindman, Ky. to deliver checks from Chapter members totaling $830 for the school’s flood relief, following the recent Kentucky floods. The checks were presented to the school’s Executive Director Will Anderson.

While at the school, Ms. Durbin spent several hours helping to dry and preserve school documents which were affected by the flood waters. Her project reflects the type of work DAR members perform for the NSDAR’s National Day of Service each October.

The Hindman Settlement School is one of four DAR supported schools. Additionally, in the early twentieth century, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution founded five other schools which members continue to support. The DAR-founded schools were started in rural and disadvantaged areas where public education was not accessible. Their mission was to provide traditional values and educational skills to help the students reach their full potential in life. Today, each school has a different focus serving a variety of special needs programs including adult literacy, attention deficit disorder, dyslexia, and children in family crisis.
