When schools hire a big-name coach it's usually considered to be a home run. If that's the case, the Boyd Buchanan Buccaneers have hit a grand slam. The Bucs have come to terms with former Alcoa head coach Gary Rankin to become the school's new head football coach.
Rankin will replace Jeremy Bosken who recently resigned to take the job as the head coach at Tri-State Christian Academy. Rankin resigned at Alcoa but emphasized he was not retiring. He also said he was coming to the Chattanooga area to be closer to his family who lives here.
His son J.T. is currently the strength coach at Boyd Buchanan.
The 68-year-old Rankin has won more games and more state championships than any other coach in Tennessee high school history. He has been head coach at three different schools, starting at Smith County in 1982 and moving to Murfreesboro Riverdale in 1990 where he put together a record of 194-25 with four state titles. He moved to Alcoa and put together an amazing mark of 201 wins and only 20 losses, winning 13 state championships, including the last seven in a row. His overall record is 466-79 and he could likely close in on 500 career wins before he leaves Boyd Buchanan.
Immediately after his resignation at Alcoa, Rankin's name was linked to several openings around Tennessee, including Class A state power South Pittsburg. He visited Boyd Buchanan on February 17 and made up his mind a few days later after all details had been worked out.
Rankin will be introduced at a team meeting and a press conference on Monday afternoon at Boyd Buchanan.
