Abandoned Derelict Boat Poses A Danger - And Response (2)

  • Friday, March 29, 2024
For several years, a boat has been caught on the side of Wolftever Creek, about a quarter of a mile below the bridge on Short Tail Springs Road.

For some reason, unknown to me, it has floated down the creek and, when the water comes up, it will be a hazard to boats navigating the waters.

Over a week ago I contacted TVA, TWRA and the Environmental Protection Agency. I spoke to real people over the telephone. I explained the situation and gave them the location. No one was sure what to do, but they all assured me that they would be back in touch.
I wonder if there is oil and gas in the engine and tank that could be spilled into the water? As the water rises the situation will get worse.

I am waiting for a call....

When people see problems, they should report it exactly as you have. Hats off to you.

I believe that all navigational channels, of all types are regulated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. I will call them Monday. and share what you have reported to TVA. I believe TVA is responsible as well. My phone will be on dial Tuesday reading your observation to them. If many call, the regulatory agencies may take note.

What if that boat hits someone’s dock or worse? See a problem, report it with documentation that you reported for accountability purposes.

In response to Ernie McCarson and April Eidson, allow me to provide this answer. All of the agencies you called don’t care. That’s right, they don’t care. They have proved it for years.

We have had a houseboat, at least 40-foot long, on the banks of Turkey Foot Cove, between Webb Road and Booker T. Washington State Park, for four years. It’s actually on the property of Washington State Park. I have called all of the above named agencies for three years.

My larger concern with this type boat is someone trying to explore it and being trapped inside. However, these agencies, whose funding comes from “we the people”, don’t care.

I wish you both luck if you wish to continue making our waterways safer and cleaner. However, your luck will be better served buying a lottery ticket.
