Covenant Baseball Wins Two Over Sewanee

The Covenant College baseball team and Sewanee battled it out in a doubleheader on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon on campus. It turned out to be a great day for the Scots as a walk-off win in game two capped off a sweep of the Tigers. 

Game 1 Final (7 Innings): Covenant 7, Sewanee 5 A RBI single in the first inning put the Tigers ahead 1-0. In the bottom of the first, Covenant scored a pair of runs on wild pitches and added another with a Sam Cecil RBI single to go in front 3-1.  A double steal in the fourth inning by Sewanee put it back within one run.  A RBI sacrifice fly by Kenny Mills in the fourth inning made it 4-2.

The next batter was Zeke Gilbert, who crushed a 3-run home run. In the sixth inning it was Sewanee's turn to get in on the home run fun as Will Yarbrough smashed a 3-run shot to make it 7-5.
Sewanee was retired in order in the seventh inning to end the game. 

Sewanee outhit Covenant 6-5. The Tigers had one error while the Scots had none. Mills, Gilbert, Cecil, Ben Johnson, and Daniel Bell each had one hit for Covenant. Jaden Carlson (3 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K), William Gignilliat (1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 K), Elliot Eastin (2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 K), and Jonathan Glover ( 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER) all pitched for the Scots. 

Game 2 Final (7 innings): Covenant, 5, Sewanee 4 Sewanee took the lead in the second inning as a RBI single brought home a runner who led off the inning with a triple. Kolby Kimberly put Covenant in front in the bottom of the frame with a 2-RBI double to center field.  The Tigers jumped right back in front in the third inning with a 2-run home run from Wilson Irvin. 

Mills tied the game at three with a two-out RBI single to left field in the fourth inning. Covenant took the lead again in the sixth inning as a RBI groundout by Gilbert scored Kimberly. With Sewanee down to its final strike with a runner on second and third, a hard ground ball kicked off the pitcher into the outfield to put it in front 5-4. 

Covenant battled back in the seventh as a wild pitch scored Wes Dusek who pinch ran for Sam Cecil. With the bases-loaded and one out, Mills reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop and Kimberly beat out the throw to home to win the game for Covenant.  

Covenant moves to 19-8 all-time against Sewanee. Sewanee outhit Covenant 8-7. Each team had no errors. Cecil led Covenant in hits with two. Kimberly reached base in all three at-bats with a hit and two walks. 

Jake Schock (3 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K), Ethan Goebert (1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 K), Jackson Rau (1 IP, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K), Austin Clark (1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 K), and Zach Tolleson (1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) all pitched for Covenant. 

Covenant begins a three-game series with Maryville on Friday at home.
