Covenant Women Dominate Second Half For 3-1 Win

  • Saturday, September 7, 2024

The Covenant College women's soccer team hosted Bob Jones for the first game of a busy weekend for the Scots. After a slow start, a dominant second half led to another win for the Scots.

The Bruins started off the game with an early goal in the ninth minute scored by Sarah Ward and assisted by Mia Marks. Lila Wiley in the 15th minute and Rachel Wall in the 29th minute put shots on goal as Covenant tried to get back into the game.  In the closing minutes of the half, Blythe Jelley and Mae Pierce put shots on goal, but the Scots were unable to draw level before halftime.

Less than three minutes after play resumed Emma Riggs scored a goal from deep after an errant pass from the goalie left a wide open net for her to shoot in.  Pierce almost scored in the 57th minute as an intended cross nailed off the crossbar and out of play.

The score remained tied until the 71st minute when Lila Wiley was tripped up in the box leading to a penalty kick that AnnaLi Weekley converted. Covenant wasn't done as Wiley scored the third goal with her left foot after a nice pass from Reece Black.  The Bruins had a long-distance shot hit the top of the crossbar in the 85th minute, but luckily for the Scots it went out back behind the goal.

Covenant moves to 2-0-1 all-time against Bob Jones.  The Scots outshot the Bruins 26-6.
Covenant had the higher foul count, 10-5. With a record of 3-0, this is the best start to a season since 2017 for Covenant.  Wiley and Weekley both have two goals through three games to lead the Scots.

The Scots take on Centre tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. at Scotland Yard.
