  • Thursday, January 2, 2025

St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School will welcome the Rt. Rev. Dr. Jake Owensby, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Louisiana and Chancellor of the University of the South, as the featured speaker for the 2024-2025 Bishop Reynolds Forum. The event will take place on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. in McCrory Hall for the Performing Arts. The talk is free and open to the public.

A reception and Q&A session will follow immediately after the lecture, offering attendees the opportunity to engage with Bishop Owensby and explore the themes presented in his talk.

The Bishop Reynolds Forum, established in 1993 in memory of the Rt. Reverend George L. Reynolds, SMA ’45, former Bishop of Tennessee, brings distinguished speakers to campus to address topics of spiritual, moral, and societal importance. Past speakers have included Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham, Holocaust survivor Renee Firestone, Vietnam POW Cmdr. Porter Halyburton SMA ’59, National Geographic Photographer Stephen Alvarez ’83, and World Wildlife Fund President Carter Roberts.

Bishop Owensby brings a wealth of experience and insight to this year’s forum, said officials. Elected bishop of the Diocese of Western Louisiana in 2012, he has also served as a member of the University of the South's Board of Regents since 2019 and was elected its 26th chancellor in 2023. Bishop Owensby is recognized for his thoughtful and inspiring perspectives on faith, hope, and leadership.

Bishop Owensby earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Emory University and graduated from the School of Theology at the University of the South in 1997. His extensive service within the Episcopal Church and broader community includes roles on the Task Force on the Opioid Crisis and the Presiding Bishop’s Council of Advice.
