ASHEVILLE, NC – The Southern Conference today named its football players of the week for games played on Saturday, October 6.

Georgia Southern quarterback J.R. Revere was named as the Offensive Player of the Week; linebacker Will Bouton of Furman was honored as the Defensive Player of the Week and the Paladins’ wide receiver Isaac West has been selected the Freshman of the Week.

Revere, a 5-11, 184-pound senior from LaGrange, GA, personally accounted for 339 total offense yards in Georgia Southern’s 50-14 win over Western Carolina. He posted his 339 yards on just 21 offensive plays, an average of 16.1 yards per play. Revere rushed for a career-high 194 yards on 15 carries and completed five of six passes for 145 yards. He average 29.0 yards per completion against the Catamounts.

Bouton, a 6-2, 232 senior linebacker from Greenville, SC, keyed the Paladin defense that helped down #5 Appalachian State, 28-22, on Saturday. Bouton had a team-high 12 tackles (seven solos), three tackles for loss, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup and two quarterback hurries. His fumble recovery at the ASU 39 helped set up a third quarter Furman touchdown that put the Paladins ahead, 21-7. The Furman defense held Appalachian to 222 yards on 81 plays, an average of 2.7 yards per play.

Offense

QB J.R. Revere, Georgia Southern

This Date In SoCon History

Oct. 13, 1990: In a high scoring affair, William & Mary outlasted VMI, 59-27 in a game played in Norfolk. QB Tony Scales completed nine of 12 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns. TE Dan Lyle had four receptions for 154 yards and caught TD passes of 67, 30 and 25 yards.

Oct. 13, 1990: Furman posted its third straight win over Appalachian State by claiming a 30-7 win at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, NC.

Oct. 13, 1990: Muhammad Shamsid-Deen scored on a 15-yard run early in the fourth quarter to help Chattanooga post a 7-6 win at The Citadel. The score was set up by a 73-yard kickoff return by Shoun Habersham.

Oct. 13, 1984: Joel Thompson’s interception in the end zone on an attempted two-point conversion pass enabled The Citadel to preserve a 34-33 win over Western Carolina in Cullowhee. Thompson intercepted Jeff Gilbert’s pass that would have given the ‘Cats a dramatic come-from-behind victory. Gilbert has passed 14-yards to Eric Rasheed with 24 seconds left to pull within one. Greg Davis’ 26-yard field goal with 2:58 top play proved to be the game winner.

Oct. 13, 1984: In a battle of two nationally ranked teams, Georgia Southern posted a 24-17 win over Chattanooga in Statesboro, GA. The Mocs, ranked 20th in the nation, were led by Artis Edwards who rushed for 118 yards on 27 carries. The 17th-ranked Eagles were led by QB Tracy Ham who completed 16 of 27 passes for 222 yards.

Oct. 13, 1979: Ron Lear, a freshman walk-on tailback for Marshall, rushed the ball 30 times for 218 yards but the Herd lost at Furman, 34-24. Brothel Cole led the Paladins with 105 yards rushing including a 76-yard touchdown sprint.

Oct. 13, 1979: VMI held off a late Appalachian rally to defeat the Mountaineers, 27-22, in Boone. Floyd Allen and Butch Hostetter each ran for a touchdown for the Keydets and John Bangley tosses a scoring pass to Robert Savage as VMI built a 27-10 lead at half. But ASU scored twice in the fourth quarter but missed both PAT attempts.

Wofford: The Terriers’ got back on the winning track with a 59-14 win over visiting VMI on Oct. 6 . . . Melvin Jones carried 15 times for 121 yards and a score to lead Wofford to the win . . . CB Roland Harris had a pair of interceptions for Wofford . . . Freshman Erik Hutchinson had a team-high seven tackles in the game . . . The Terriers’ 59 points marked the most in a game since 1992 . . . Despite a sore ankle, QB Travis Wilson led the Terriers to touchdowns on their first four possessions against VMI.

Peterson Notches Another Record: Georgia Southern FB Adrian Peterson rushed for 105 yards on 22 carries to notch his 48th consecutive 100-yard game . . . It was his 36th consecutive regular season game with 100 or more yards . . . He set yet another NCAA record for consecutive regular season games with 100 or more yards rushing . . . Peterson also eclipsed the 8,000 yard mark for career rushing . . . He now has 8,081 career yards, including postseason games, in 48 contests . . . R.J. Bowers of Division III Grove City had posted 35 straight 100-yard games during his career.


Long Distance: Western Carolina’s B.J. Jessup tied a SoCon record with an 85-yard fumble return for a score against Georgia Southern . . . Furman’s Josh Cooper had initially set the record two weeks earlier with an 85-yard return for a score against VMI . . . GSU QB J.R. Revere had a 56-yard TD run and set up a field goal with a 52-yard jaunt against WCU . . . Furman’s Brian Bratton returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a score against Appalachian State . . . It was Bratton’s second KOR for a score this year . . . He also had a 91-yard return against VMI on Sept. 22 . . . The league record for KORs for a score in a season is three, held by three players.


Home Sweet Home: With the Oct. 6 win over Western Carolina, Georgia Southern notched its 35 consecutive home win . . . The Eagles now own the two longest homefield winning streaks in I-AA history . . . GSU won 38 straight at home from 1985-90 . . . Appalachian State has also been successful on its home field, having won its last 16 SoCon games at Kidd Brewer Stadium.


Records: Furman’s Louis Ivory needs just 10 yards against The Citadel on Saturday to set the school record for career rushing yards . . . The mark is currently held by Carl Tremble (1989-92) . . . Furman CB Richie Jackson had a fourth quarter interception against Appalachian that was the 16th of his career . . . He is now two thefts shy of the school record of 18 in a career . . .


National Rankings: The Southern Conference has the nation’s top two Division I-AA teams according to the Oct. 8 ESPN/USA Today college football poll . . . Georgia Southern remained the number one team in the nation for the sixth consecutive week in both polls . . . Furman, ranked third by ESPN and The Sports Network, moved up to second in the ESPN poll . . . The Paladins remained third in The Sports Network poll . . . Appalachian State, which had been ranked fifth, fell to eighth in both polls after a 28-22 loss at Furman on Oct. 6 . . . Wofford is also receiving votes in both polls.
