Scores of mortgage bankers from across Tennessee will converge on Chattanooga May 18-20 for the first Tennessee Mortgage Bankers Association (TMBA) convention to be held here in many years.

The 30th Annual TMBA Convention will be headquartered at The Chattanoogan and will feature a variety of activities including the installation of a new president, Don Oakes of Chattanooga, succeeding Bobby Allison, also of Chattanooga.

At the installation luncheon on Tuesday, John Courson, president of the Mortgage Bankers Assocaition of America (MBAA) will be featured speaker and discuss the state of the mortgage banking industry in the country. New officers and directors for 2003-04 will be installed and the Mortgage Banker of the Year and Local Association of the Year will be honored.

Pat Vaughn of Chattanooga, convention chairman, said a president’s reception will be held at the Tennessee Aquarium on Monday at 7 p.m. when those attending the reception will have an opportunity to tour the Aquarium.

The theme for this year’s convention, with an Aquarium connection, is “Get Hooked on Success.”

Other special events will include a golf tournament, casino party , silent auction and a tour of Chattanooga.

Several educational sessions are planned including a panel discussion of the mortgage banking outlook for 2003 with Douglas Duncan, MBAA chief economist, Roger Thomas, Tennessee Department of Financial Institutions, and Martha Gentry, TMBA legislative coordinator.

Other sessions will include Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) program overview and update presented by Ed Lozier, director of homeownership for THDA, appraisal issues and property valuation, FNMA (Fannie Mae) update, management, commercial lending, loan originator sales training, FHA and VA workshops.

Several organizations are sponsoring the convention. Among them are platinum sponsors, Fannie Mae, First Tennessee Home Loans, Freddie Mac, MGIC and THDA. Gold sponsors include PMI, RMIC and Triad Guaranty. A silver sponsor is Radian Guaranty.

One educational session expected to attract considerable attention is the Mortgage Banking Outlook 2003 panel discussion expected to cover pertinent issues currently facing lenders in the association. The issues include production expectations given the current economic climate, predatory lending and mortgage fraud, an update on legislative issues facing lenders and anticipated future trends in the industry.

The THDA presentation will give those participating in the educational session an opportunity to learn about the THDA and the program available for first-time home buyers. Detailed information will be provided for THDA’s Great Rate program and Great Start program, including the easy steps and shortcuts to delivery of loans to THDA. The session will be offered twice on Monday.
