A man suffered significant burns when he tried to put out a grease fire at his uncle's home on Sunday afternoon.
Chattanooga firefighters arrived at 12:19 p.m. to a reported house fire at 4105-A Quinn Adams St.
They found the fire had been extinguished, but at a high cost to 35-year-old Michael McCorkle. Mr. McCorkle had come from his home nearby to his uncle's house to put out a fire that had started in a pan on the stove. After successfully placing the pan in the kitchen sink, Mr. McCorkle made the dangerous mistake of trying to put the grease fire out with water, causing the fire to flash.
The flames caused second-degree burns to his hands and forearms.
He was rushed to Erlanger Hospital where his condition is unknown at this time.
The fire was contained to the stove and sink area of the kitchen.
