New Covenant Coach: Chattanooga Christian School tennis coach Sue Webb has been hired as the men's and women's tennis coach at Covenant College on Lookout Mountain. Webb is in her 10th season as the CCS boys and girls coach and has won nine state team titles.

Chattanooga Christian School tennis coach Sue Webb has led the Chargers to nine boys’ and girls’ TSSAA state tennis titles in the past nine years and now has agreed to take her court expertise up the road as Covenant College head tennis coach for men and women.

Webb, whose CCS girls’ play for the region title at home on Thursday against Friendship Christian, replaces Covenant coach Katherine Smith (a former CCS tennis coach in the late 1990s) who has retired to focus more on her family.

“This is a bittersweet decision for me as it’s going to be tough to leave Chattanooga Christian at the end of the season, but I look forward to coaching at Covenant College and the NCAA D-III level,” said Webb who knows what it takes to succeed at the college level as she was a UTC All-American in singles and doubles in the mid-1980s and an NCAA D-II national doubles champion in 1984.

“I have grown as a Christian and as a coach during these last 10 years at CCS and know that coaching at a strong Christian college has so many benefits for me and my family,” stated Webb, whose husband, Scott, was a two-time state doubles champion at McCallie in the mid-1970s and later played collegiately at Kentucky, son, Scotty, is a senior on the McCallie tennis team and daughter, Fiona, was a member of the 2005 and 2007 CCS state championship teams.

One More Spring Fling: CCS hopes that the Sue Webb Era, which began in the spring of 2002 with boys and girls state crowns, will continue through the upcoming state tournament in Murfreesboro, May 24-27.

Her resume at CCS is impressive.

Four boys’ and five girls’ state team titles. Six singles champs and three doubles winners. The CCS girls have played in every A-AA state tournament since the D-I, D-II split after the 1997 season, including the past nine under coach Webb.

Four-Peat: The CCS boys won four straight state championships, 2002-03-04-05, while the girls’ followed suit, winning it all 2005-06-07-08.

The Charger girls are two wins away from earning their 10th straight berth at Spring Fling (state tournament) in the Webb Era and 14th straight overall.

Recruiting and More On-Campus Courts: “Recruiting is pretty much done for this year, but I will be working on high school players for the 2012-13 season," she stated.

“Another priority for me is to have at least three more tennis courts on campus as soon as possible. We have three courts now, but need more so we can hold on-campus matches.”
