East Ridge's Camp Jordan Park Has Full Schedule Of Events

  • Saturday, April 27, 2013

The East Ridge Parks and Recreation Department is more than excited about the 2013 schedule of events at Camp Jordan Park, Parks and Recreation Director Stump Martin said.

He said he and his staff have worked to bring events to the city that provide economic impact to the East Ridge businesses, fun for the citizens and a memorable experience to the visitors.

"It's exciting to look at the calendar of events and see five World Series or National events coming to East Ridge," Martin said.

"Our I-75, Exit 1 location, the improvements that are being made to our fields and the East Ridge hospitality is a huge selling point for Camp Jordan Park."

Martin said that the Parks and Recreation staff and a supportive city council have worked together to make Camp Jordan a better place for entertainment, fun and relaxation.

"We are scheduling a grand opening for a new canoe launch soon and construction on a second canoe launch at Camp Jordan should begin before 2013 ends," Martin said. "The new 19-hole Camp Jordan Disc Golf course is busy almost every day with players facing the difficult challenge the layout provides."

Veteran Arena Supervisor Bill Owens has almost a full schedule of shows and events for the popular 34,000 square foot facility.

Gardening, Gun, Coin, Dog, Bird, and Reptile shows, consignment sales, Mixed-Martial Arts Fight Nights, The Alhambra Shrine Circus, Christian Cheerleaders of America and Indoor Soccer keep people coming back to Camp Jordan Arena.

A contract with Ring of Honor Wrestling was agreed upon this week to bring live wrestling to the Arena on Sept. 6.

“Bug-A-Paluza and the "Master Your Garden" Garden Expo packed Camp Jordan Park last weekend and the Honda Gold Wing Rider’s Association Spring Fling event (April 24-27) has brought more than a 1,000 people to East Ridge,” Martin said. “Jfest 2013 (June 1) and the East Ridge Merchants Association's Libertyfest II (June 29) will bring top musical entertainment and fireworks back to Camp Jordan."

Libertyfest II will feature the rock-and-roll music the Atlanta Rhythm Section as the event headliner. ARS hits are "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight", "Champagne Jam", "So Into You", "Imaginary Lover", "Angel", "Do It Or Die", "Neon Nites" and the cover version of the Classics IV hit, "Spooky".

Martin said he has been surprised at the tremendous increase in the number of running events scheduled for the park this year.

"Last year we allowed the Hamilton County elementary schools to have weekly cross country events at Camp Jordan during the fall and we had more than 1,000 people in the park on some of the Thursday's they competed," Martin said. "That exposure, plus the positive promotions from Tim Morgan and the Chattanooga Sports and Events Committee has spread the word that Camp Jordan is a cool and friendly place for running events."

There are nine running events scheduled at Camp Jordan, including color runs and a soaker run.

To promote fishing and outdoor activities the East Ridge Optimist Club is sponsoring a Free Fishing N Fun Derby on May 4 at Dickert Lake inside Camp Jordan Park.

The Camp Jordan Soccer fields and Redoubt will serve as home to the inaugural Scenic City Cup (May 3-5).

Redoubt, North River Soccer, the Chattanooga Futbol Club and East Ridge Futbol Club have combined efforts for this event.

The East Ridge Futbol Club will host the East Ridge FC Fall Invitational (Aug. 24-25) at Camp Jordan.

ERFC President Jon Hooper said he too is excited about the soccer events coming to Camp Jordan during the summer of 2013.

“Not only do the tournaments enhance the reputation of our outstanding soccer facility, they allow our club to play against other high-quality players and teams that makes ERFC teams better," Hooper said.

Camp Jordan has already hosted two baseball tournaments with more than 40 teams and a softball tournament with more than 36 teams this season.

A total of 19 baseball or softball tournaments were scheduled at Camp Jordan for 2013, including the Nations Baseball Select National Championship (June 25-30), USSSA Class A World Series (July 10-15), National Softball Association Softball World Series and Opening Ceremonies (July 21-27) and Amateur Softball Association 12-under Nationals and 8-under National Invitational starting July 28.

“Sweet tea, ice cold lemonade, Southern hospitality and watching kids play softball or baseball sounds like a great way to spend a summer day,” Martin said. “All of the teams who come to East Ridge will also enjoy the many attractions the Tri-State Area has to offer.”

Martin said longtime Camp Jordan Park Supervisor Wayne Thompson and his grounds crew should be credited for helping bring the large number of tournaments to East Ridge due to the condition of the playing fields.

"Our crew works the fields every day," Thompson said of the 13 softball/baseball fields and the nine soccer fields at Camp Jordan. "Even when we have downtime on the fields we are working to try and make them better."

Martin said he has a vision of what he wants Camp Jordan to be.

“My dream is to come across the bridge on Camp Jordan Parkway and every parking lot be filled with vehicles, all the fields full of kids playing, standing-room only around Dickert Lake with people fishing, Disc-golfers backed up waiting to tee off, canoeist lined up to get into the creek and our 2-mile paved track covered with runners and walkers getting more fit,” Martin said. "I-75, Exit 1 at Camp Jordan Park is a special place and more people are discovering that."
