City Council Ad Hoc Committee To Study Moving Elections To August, Adding More Districts, Staggering Terms

  • Tuesday, May 21, 2013

City Council Vice Chairman Chip Henderson said Tuesday he will lead an ad hoc committee that will look into possibly increasing the number of council districts from the current term.

The panel will also look at staggering the terms of council members, who are currently all elected at the same time, he said.

Vice Chairman Henderson said the committee will also look into moving city elections from March to August, when most other local elections are held - except for Collegedale.

It has been argued in the past that it would bring a major savings for taxpayers. However, some council members felt there would be more attention to the city races if they were not lumped in with a number of other election contests.

Also serving on the committee will be Council members Jerry Mitchell and Larry Grohn.

Chairman Yusuf Hakeem said he wanted to make sure that the committee has a limited number of issues to deal with.

He said, "We do not need it to be open-ended and go on and on."
