Terrice Ayers Toney

  • Monday, June 17, 2013

Terrice A. Toney died Sunday, June 16, 2013, surrounded by family at Helen, Ga.

On a day in November, Terrice was born to Inez Vandervier Ayers and A. D. Ayers.  She was the right age to be baby Jesus in the church Christmas pageant.  From that day to the end of her life the Church was always the center of her life.

Her siblings are Milam Ayers, deceased of Winder, GA; Jeanette Johnson of Lake Park, GA; Jack Ayers of Atlanta, GA; Jacqueline Burkhalter of Helen, GA; Myra Pace of Sautee Nacoochee, GA; Norman Ayers of Cleveland, GA.

She was married to Elmo Toney Jr. for 53 years.  They had five children, Elaine Peterson, (Richard) of Wooster, OH; David Toney (Victoria) of Athens,AL; James Toney (Dehone) of Montgomery, AL; Susan Smisson (Drake) of Lookout Mt. GA; Lisa Gray (James) of Warner Robins, GA.

She loved and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They are Christopher Toney (Kim), Michael Toney (Lisa), Hoyt Toney, Stephen Toney, Ashley Toney, Matthew Smisson (Bethany), Hope Smission, James Gray, III (Sarah), Elaine Price (Jonathan) and Angela Whitehead (Jacob).

While living in Atlanta, Georgia, she attended Pryor Street Presbyterian Church.  Moving to Athens, Alabama the family made the First Presbyterian Church their place of worship.  Returning to Georgia, the family attended Vineville Presbyterian Church of Macon, GA. and later North Macon Presbyterian Church, PCA.  After the death of her husband, her niece Connie Hood encouraged her to move to Helen, where Nacoochee United Methodist Church became her church home.

Terrice never met a stranger, which is why she served the community in so many ways.  When her family was younger, she served as a Girl Scout leader, helped the ball teams, was a terrific cook and great friend.  In the churches she taught Sunday School, organized many functions, especially those that involved the kitchen or flowers. Her ability to organize and work well with others gave her the opportunity to share her strengths.  God led her along some exciting paths.

In lieu of flowers her wishes would be a donation to Nacoochee United Methodist Church Building Fund  P.O.Box  426 Sautee Nacoochee, GA 30571 or Hospice of  Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Inc. 2150 Limestone Parkway, Gainsville, GA 30501.

The celebration of her life will be at Alexander Funeral Home in Cleveland, GA. on Tuesday, June18th.   Friends and family may call from 11:00-12:30 with the service to follow.  Burial will be held at 4:00 in the Old Shadowlawn Cemetery in Lawrenceville, GA.
