Barton's Late Goal Lifts Lady Scots 2-1 Over Averett

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN-- Christy Barton's late goal spurred the Covenant women's soccer team to 2-1 victory over USA South foe Averett on a gorgeous fall afternoon at Scotland Yard.

With the victory, Covenant (8-8-1, 6-3 USA South) avoided falling into a tie with Averett (4-11, 4-6 USA South) for sixth place in the conference standings.

The two teams played a very evenly matched first half, with both teams collecting three shots on goal in a scoreless first period. The Lady Scots did have the edge in total shots, 9-6.

However, it didn't take long for Covenant to get on the board after the intermission, as they took a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute on Anna Porch's 12th goal of the season.
Bethany Logan had the assist as it was her shot that deflected off Averett keeper Kim Josephson and to Porch for the score.

The Cougars tied it up 15 minutes later, when Cathrine Onarheim found the back of the net off a pass from teammate Amanda Gustavsson in the 64th minute of play. The score stayed that way until Barton's heroics. In the 79th minute, Logan played the ball to Ruth Terry at the top of the box and Terry quickly slotted a pass to Barton who put it in for her third game-winning goal of the season and fifth overall. Both Terry and Logan were awarded an assist on the play.

Logan has tallied two assists in each of the last two matches and has five for the year.

From there, the Lady Scots' defense and keeper Lucy Johnson were able to preserve the victory. Johnson made five saves while allowing just the one goal as she played the entire match. Her counterpart Josephson also made five saves in the losing effort.

Covenant is back in action Saturday, when they play William Peace at 4:30 p.m. for their final home game of the regular season. Senior Day activities will take place before the match as Covenant will honor Bethany Logan and Lucy Johnson.

Inflatable games (slide, obstacle course) along with sno-cones and cotton candy will be available for fans from 1-5 p.m. at the Intramural Field next to Scotland Yard.
