George Richard Mitchell, 96, of Chattanooga, died on Saturday, October 25, 2014.

Mr. Mitchell was the son of the late George W., Jr. and Mary Lou Elkins Mitchell; great-grandson of the late Peter Turney, Civil War hero, jurist and former governor of Tennessee.  He was originally from Decherd, TN where he was an active member of Decherd Baptist Church at age 15, was a high school athlete where he played center on the 17th District Championship football team, guard on the basketball team, and graduated from Tennessee Technical College earning his bachelor's and master's degrees.

Mr. Mitchell taught accounting at Tennessee Technical University, and was later employed as an accountant supervisor of the Accounting Department at Miller Brothers, Chattanooga Boiler and Tank, and Cliff-Smith Company. 

He also served as a deacon at Brainerd Baptist Church and First Baptist Church for a total of 60 years and was a member of the Exchange Club.  He taught the Seeker Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church for many years and also served as master sergeant in USAAC, Pacific Ocean Area during World War II.

He married his surviving wife of 71 years, Barbara May Guerro Mitchell, on Oct. 2, 1943. Also surviving are his son, George “Rick” Mitchell II and his wife, Barbara, of Ooltewah; granddaughter, Emily (Colby) Houston of Ooltewah; and great-grandsons, Kyle and Ryan Houston.  

Visitation will be from 12-1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the McEwen Chapel of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga, 401 Gateway Ave., Chattanooga, Tn. 37402, followed by a 1:30 p.m. funeral service.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Sports & Rec Plus, 2288 Gunbarrel Road, #154-235, Chattanooga, Tn. 37421.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist, 404 South Moore Road.
