Nuclear Exercise To Involve TVA, Federal, State And Local Agencies

  • Monday, November 3, 2014
The Tennessee Valley Authority is coordinating with multiple federal, state and local emergency response agencies to conduct a routine emergency preparedness exercise involving TVA’s Sequoyah Nuclear Plant on Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Part of an ongoing series of emergency exercises required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Wednesday’s drill will involve nearly 1,000 personnel from TVA, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, and emergency responders from both Hamilton and Bradley counties.

Residents in the area may see radiological monitoring teams, hear on- and off-site sirens and note increased activity at and near the Sequoyah plant, as well as near TVA’s Chattanooga offices.

In addition to the NRC, personnel from the Department of Homeland Security will be evaluating the readiness of state and local agencies to ensure the health and safety of the public.
Results of the evaluation will be shared in a DHS public meeting at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 21, at the Hamilton County Sheriff Annex, 6233 Dayton Blvd, in Chattanooga.
