Smith, Cora Irene Grant (South Pittsburg)

Cora Irene Grant Smith, 84, of South Pittsburg, Tennessee, died on Thursday, November 6, 2014, at a local nursing home.

The daughter of the late Herbert Ambrose and Helen Scrudder Grant, she was a native of Bryant, AL and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church near Scottsboro, AL, where she had served as pianist andSunday school teacher.  She was a pastor’s wife and spent much of her life ministering, alongside her husband, to their church families.  A wonderful homemaker, she loved sewing, crocheting, canning and gardening, especially flowers.  She was also very musically gifted. She could play a number of musical instruments by ear and also sang in many church quartets. 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Arvell Smith; son, Danny Smith; grandson, Nathan Smith; sister, Emma Grant; and brothers, Junior, Ambrose, James, and Ervin Grant.

She is survived by her children, Helen (Stan) Rector of South Pittsburg and Steve (Carrie) Smith of Killen, AL; daughter-in-law, Grace Smith of South Pittsburg; grandchildren, Lesley Rector, Jr. of South Pittsburg, Lindsey Rector (Stuart Pilsbury) of Baltimore, MD, Brandon Smith of Pikeville, TN, Kaitlin Smith of St. Petersburg, FL, and Lena (Ian) Lowery of Chattanooga, TN; great-grandson, Owen Pilsbury; sisters, Grace Leonard of Atlanta, GA, Marie Gibson of Pisgah, AL, Martha (Bill) Gouger of Bryant, AL, Ann (Reginald) Higdon of Higdon, AL; brother, Donald (Janice) Grant of East Ridge, TN; special sister-in-law, Charlie Grant; beloved Smith family members, Anna Jean Blevins of Kimball, TN, Cora (Don) Bivins of Sewanee, TN, Carolyn (Herman) Harris of South Pittsburg, Van (Sue) Smith of Detroit, MI and Darwin Smith of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at the South Pittsburg Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. CT. Interment will follow at Straightway Cemetery in Bryant, AL.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday, Nov. 9, from noon Central until service time at the funeral home.
